| Tip: | Piston pumps on excavators will usually give you a sign before they have a catastrophic failure. When the rotating group starts to vibrate or chatter due to excessive leakage between valve plate, barrel or piston feet as certain functions are performed causing vibration in the excavator. All of this will cause the pump to make wining noise and send a constant or pulsing vibration through the excavator. When the pumps give you these signs they may still operate, but as they do, it is causing critical un-resolving damage to internal components. These internal components, the majority of the time, can be re-machined or rebuilt saving money and time. |
| Subject: | Power Shift Transmission Filter Head Bypasses September 2009 |

| Tip: | When replacing or rebuilding major drive components after a bearing or gear failure, always check that the filter bypass is clean, free of debris, that it moves freely and is functioning properly. If there is a 'filter bypass' or 'clogged indication' light in the cab, make sure that it functions and that the light will activate. One way to check the light is to disconnect the wire(s) and short circuit if just one wire to machine frame ground or the filter head housing. When there are two wires present, short circuit the two wires on the wiring harness side together. If the light comes on in both of these cases, you know your wiring and light are in good working condition. |

| Tip: | When checking the main presusre on an excavator due to slow operation after reaching operating temperature, be sure to check case drain to eliminate travel motors and also the turn table manifold. |

Powershift Transmission Heating - Torque Converter June 2009 |

Tip: |
Heating problems will usually arise in the torque converter also causing the transmission to operate hot. Flooding of the torque converter can cause heating and usually due to excessive wear in the scavenge pumps. Another cause is simply the leakage inside the torque converter, casuing excessive drag. |
